Amy Winehouse: Part of British Underground showcasing history

Celebrating the release of Back to Black, the feature film that chronicles the life and music of Amy Winehouse, British Underground’s Crispin Parry reflects on producing her US debut at the NYC Bowery Ballroom (March 13, 2007).

“Amy Winehouse performed as part of a British Underground showcase series called Live from London in March 2007, which we produced with Metropolis Music. The rest of the Bowery bill was made up of The Pipettes from Brighton and an emerging singer called Jamie Woon. At the time of the booking no one had heard the single Rehab or Amy’s new album so I remember thinking “It might be a risk putting her on”, says Crispin.

“However, the showcase was packed with hip New Yorkers and her performance with the full band was incredible, turning out to be one of few she played in the USA. After the show, I met Amy and her gang playing pool at an after-hours dive bar called Toad Hall. The next day, we all moved on to Austin, where Amy debuted at SXSW ”.
